I haven’t blogged about this yet because I haven’t had the time to start working on it – but I will soon!

I’ve been selected to participate in Portland-based WeMake‘s new project to raise money for arts programs in Portland schools. It’s called Put A Bird In It, and you can click here to take a gander at some of the other talented folks who will be involved!

In order to prepare for making this thing, I’ve been doing research into whether or not birdhouses should actually be painted at all…

Zine Dream kicks off three days of festivities tonight! There’s an opening party tonight at Art Metropole, and tomorrow there will be a fun panel discussion and some workshops, and on Sunday there will be a bunch of badass exhibitors selling wares (including myself)! Check out the Zine Dream site for specifics on programming. Hope to see you there!

On Sunday the zine fair is at the Tranzac (in Toronto – nearest major intersection, Bathurst and Bloor) from noon until 5 pm. Happy zine-ing, yall!

I DREAM OF CTHULHU
If you haven’t read or listened to HP...

I DREAM OF CTHULHU

If you haven’t read or listened to HP Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu, do it now! My picture is of Henry Anthony Wilcox, a vital character in that story. Wilcox is a young artist tormented by dark dreams of monsters and gods and destruction, and it is his sculpture of Cthulhu that sets the story into motion. I’ve always been fascinated by dream landscapes, and the power of speaking with spirits and gods through dreams. There is a considerable interplay between Lovecraft’s work and old tales of the witches’ sabbath – (primarily) women whose spirits, in dreamtime, travel to places and speak with beings unknown to the common human eye. Historian Carlo Ginzburg in his Ecstasies: Deciphering the Witches’ Sabbath discusses this phenomena, and…

So this is a little...

From the artsy blog:

What up dudes!

So this is a little different from the typical artsy fare you see ’round these parts, but hey – food making is an art!

I have a bunch of handmade (I didn’t make them at home, I made them in a profeshunal kitchen, thank you very much, so I know everything was sterile while I was prepping the jars) preserves I’m looking to sell! I have pears, beets, pear chutney, beet chutney, and a nice spicy Indian chutney which is a bit more savory. I also have a beet jelly. Each preserve comes with a silkscreened tea…

Read more & see more perty pictures

Big jars $15, little jars $10-12. This is a steal for handmade preserves made from local fuckin’ produce, and with some free silkscreened cute shit on the top of them. Hellz yeah!

If you’re in Toronto, holla at me and I’ll hook you up. If you’re not local shipping will likely cost $15 or so, but hey if you’re still into it let me know and I’ll make you a custom shop listing!

Why Sailor Moon Matters – The New Anime and Media Representation

Why Sailor Moon Matters – The New Anime and Media Representation:

At its core, the premise of Sailor Moon is about women banding together and determining the fate of the universe. It’s about women literally drawing power from community with other women and being the most powerful in the galaxy and growing up to lead the world into peace and happiness. The celebration of women and showcase of girls developing, growing up and forming their own identities is enough to make the series great, especially considering how it influenced other media to take a closer look at female heroism and relationships. But I actually want to focus on what Sailor Moon means for queer women (and other queer people) in particular and what I feel the rebooted anime should do about queer representation.

A lot of fans are hoping the anime will stick a little closer to the original manga by Naoko Takeuchi, or at least draw on the manga’s best elements. I’m certainly hoping for that with regards to queer representation. Haruka and Michiru, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, are one of the most famous gay couples in manga and anime. The original anime was pretty blatant about their relationship, to the point where the couple’s presentation caused controversy in their home country and beyond. Most know about the English dub’s censorship that turned the couple into “cousins” (this did very little to hide their queerness). Yet, there were no girls kissing in the original anime and no character ever referred to Haruka and Michiru as a couple in a non-speculative fashion. The manga, meanwhile, showed Haruka kissing a girl, and it was stated that they were lesbians and in a relationship. I’m hoping now that twenty years have passed, these aspects of the manga can finally make it into an anime. In fact, I’d like to see even more detail about their relationship. I want to see these two lovebirds kiss and tell all over the place in this new show.

Awesome article, read it! Sailor Moon has more implications for representations of queer folks, asexual folks, trans folks, & POC than you might otherwise have thought! So happy I grew up with this series.

Not so fast: Cosmopolitics and the Higgs boson

Not so fast: Cosmopolitics and the Higgs boson:
littlecitywitch:

The idea that there is one single nature is an artefact of Western culture, both cunning and naïve at the same time. It is the biased interpretation of the world at the root of colonialism past and present. Mining operations around the non-industrialised world are an example of how the Western idea of nature imposes devastation on the rest. In dealing with the local inhabitants, the white man uses (to his convenience) his scientific instruments and describes the universe: “This is a mountain, it is made of coal worth billions”. The idea makes no sense in the universe the indiginous inhabit: “This is not a mountain, this is a sleeping God, and it is clearly priceless.” Since money is the ruling spirit in the universe of the materialist, who is also more powerful, the God is usually killed no matter what.

Who is right, when it is clear that neither is speaking metaphorically? The mountain, being a cornerstone of local cosmology, literally is a god, but scientific instruments designed for a materialist universe are unable to register the fact. Every day, right now, the outcomes of these fundamental disputes, these clashes of worlds, determine the extinction or survival of indigenous cultures around the world.

The problem of nature has been since the beginning of colonial times a matter of genocide. The idea that the “standard model” has been fully demonstrated is so dramatic, so absolute, that it might fuel further invasions. Will the Western inability to co-exist with other universes take a further, deeper, turn into plain arrogant greed? How many more languages will disappear after everyone has been forced to agree that there is only one true “standard model” of the universe?

AWESOME article, relevant to all occultists, pagans, witches, magical practitioners, nature-y types, those who work with gods and spirits, etc. Hells yeah philosophy!

It’s a commentary on an illustration in the Toronto Star which caused a bit of a fuss. It was about the recent Danzig shooting in TO.

Here’s a preview:

Representing visual difference is a tricky thing in the illustration business.

It would be nice to get to a place in our society when we can represent the diversity of the people on our planet simply as they are without people feeling as though you’re making a comment specifically on who is being represented. The default is inevitably middle-class white men; deviating from that norm, in the public eye, often means that you must be saying something pertaining to that non-normative person you’re representing. For instance, if you depict a person with a disability in your illustration, the illustration must be making some sort of comment on disabilities or folks who live with them. I’m of two minds about this issue – I wish that our society was at a point where a disabled person in an illustration could just be interpreted as reflecting the diversity of humankind rather than a comment on disabilities. However, we’re not.

The illustration industry reflects that. What’s in an illustration must be …

- H.P. Lovecraft

Hey guys, here’s a mock-up of the new cover for my upcoming H.P. Lovecraft art zine! Previously named “Three-Lobed Burning Eye”, the new title will be “PUFFED SHOGGOTHS”, a phrase from one of Lovecraft’s short poems in “Fungi From Yuggoth”. Thanks to Jon Vermilyea for the name suggestion!

Little details may change, but i think this might be the final look for the cover of the zine. The previously posted cover-image will be featured in some way, i’ll probably see how it looks in grey-scale and include it in that fashion.

Stay tuned, and PLEASE, reblog and like! Spread the word! And thank you for your time and attention!

- Trevor

I’m exhibiting at TOAE (the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition this weekend, starting in less than 12 hours! Aaaah! From the blog:

In less than 12 hours I’m going to have a tent at this lovely event, theToronto Outdoor Art Exhibition at Nathan Philips Square! It’s the biggest outdoor art show in Canada and I couldn’t be happier to be attending, especially since the exhibitors are very severely juried! Thanks judges, for selecting me! I’m in booth Blue #355, which is to the northwest side of the square. Here’s a map (well, the top of the official map – to see the whole thing, click here)!

So that’s exciting! Come visit me!

Here are the hours, taken from the TOAE site:

Today this blog post will be about rad inspiring stuff. Like flowers!

I love wandering around and seeing beautiful sights like this! So awesome! Honestly, food, flowers, and occultism are my biggest inspirations, and stumbling upon something like this randomly is such a huge jackpot for me, and an awesome reminder of how magical and pretty the universe can be. I love the variety of colour in these flowers – some purple, some deep red, some magenta, some light pink, some white. Does anyone know what…

Click through for some more badass downtown Toronto flowers & an update on the Toronto Anarchist Book Fair, and TOAE (Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition), which is right around the corner!

From the blog:

Sup yall!

I’m very excited to say that I’ll be tabling at the Toronto Anarchist Book Fair this weekend! Hooray! I’ll have all of my usual goodies, plus a bunch of salves and canned goods (all from local food, professionally sealed so it doesn’t spoil – and which also come with a silkscreened tea towel!). I’m almost out of My Mundane zines and it’ll be a while before I can silkscreen any more (the fall at the earliest), so come and get yours while you still can! I’ll also have a bunch more Fruits of Love zines (printing some 2nd editions this Friday), as well as some official call-outs for my new zine project which I haven’t officially announced on the blog yet. I’ll do it after this event! I swear!

Anywho, check out the Facebook event for this fair for some more information! The event is at the University of Toronto, and you’ll be able to find me either in room 404 or 405 in the accessible Galbraith Building (at U of T) – the address is 35 St George St, Toronto. You can find me there from 10am-3:30pm on Saturday June 23rd, and from 10am-2:30pm on Sunday the 24th. Come say hello and give me a high-five!

If you have the chance, take a gander at the list of talks/workshops. So many great things to see and participate in!

Sometimes when I’m hiking in the woods I think “This place is so pristine and wild.” Then I remember some of the changes that have happened to wildlife in the past couple hundred years.

This is so fucking awesome.

I can’t wait to make more sweet environmental-activist illustrations!
I made this thing in the span of about a week, and just played, for a change! I experimented with a bit of collage in this book, which was fun. The above isn’t the best example of that, but I really enjoy the effect of the…
