“Painting, for me, when it really “happens,” is as miraculous as any natural phenomenon, as say a lettuce leaf. By “happens” I mean the painting in which the inner aspect of man and his outer aspects interlock — painting in which inner and outer are inseparable, transcends technique, transcends subject and moves into the realm of the inevitable — - then you have the lettuce leaf.”

— Statement by artist Lee Krasner on her work in 1965 - snapped at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, East Hampton, NY by George Bates (September 14, 2010)

This is exciting! Colleague and chum Andrea recently got married and did me the huge honour of using one of my handmade books as a guest book for her wedding! It looks great and worked perfectly with the theme and style of her wedding. Congrats Andrea!
You can check out some of my handmade books at my shop – I also do custom orders, and am able to create specialized accordion books, single-signature books (pictured), hardcover multi-signature books, and Japanese stab-bound books. If you’re interested in learning how to make your own books, stay tuned! I’m going to be teaching some bookbinding workshops at Site 3 in Toronto this October.
Photo by the phenomenal Johnny Lam! I love this shot of my book!

“‎Painting is just as natural a language as singing or speaking. It is a method of making a visible record of our experience, visual or imaginative, colored by our own feelings and reactions and indicated with the same simplicity and directness as singing or speaking.”

A Field Guide to Weeds Cloth cover, sewn-bound, ribbon
A Field Guide to Weeds masquerades as a 19th century pocket guide, but a guide in which the weeds themselves have taken over. This project uses the physical form of the book as a metaphor for a crack in the city sidewalk: printed in luscious five-color printing, the common dandelion, pigweed, and poison ivy—the very plants we ignore, step over, ignore, dig up, or scrupulously avoid—creep out of the gutter, up pages, and overrun the book. Multiple silhouettes overlap and repeat, drawing the reader’s attention to the overlooked.

Clark went on a harrowing bulldog walk last weekend that lasted nearly 30 minutes and spanned fifteen blocks!

Some moments deserve more than one angle. That’s why we’re ecstatic to give Photosets a huge upgrade today, giving you new levels of control to tell your stories the way you want to.

1) Photoset photos now open in all their high-res glory on the Dashboard and on your blog.

2) You can now pick a layout for your photos to tell the right story.

3) Tumblr Themes can now make Photosets look and work any way you please with a host of new theme variables:

{block:Photoset}
    <!-- Number of photos -->
    {PhotoCount}

    <!-- Integer representation of the layout -->
    {PhotosetLayout}

    <!-- JS array of the Photoset column counts -->
    {JSPhotosetLayout}

    <!-- Each of the Photoset photos -->
    {block:Photos}
        {PhotoURL-500}

        {block:HighRes}
            {PhotoURL-HighRes}
        {/block:HighRes}

        {Caption}

        {block:Exif} ... {/block:Exif}
    {/block:Photos}
{/block:Photoset}

Enjoy!
