Trying to get better at taking process shots - usually I just take one while the first colour’s drying, then totally forget about my camera until the painting’s complete since I’m so in the zone to make sure everything’s turning out properly. Working with wet media, you really do have to keep your eye on the ball at all times to make sure everything’s drying properly and that the wind didn’t blow it in the wrong way, or that the paper isn’t creating undesirable pooling patterns with the water.

Pro tip for comic book artists: No human being alive sits like that as a way of relaxing. This is beyond ridiculous.
Let’s examine the context of the image. Mary Jane is sitting on her couch, drinking coffee, wondering if Peter will be safe or perhaps wondering if he’ll ever give up crime fighting and settle down for a normal life. As I don’t know the complete context of whatever comic this is from, I cannot say what else she might be thinking.
Let’s examine the posture. She’s sitting in a way where her back is arched so her boobs are pushed out, followed by her arms squeezing them to make them look bigger. Even her legs are bent oddly as to suggest that at least one of those feet is going to fall asleep soon. Look, I get it. Mary Jane is hot, but for Christ’s sake, this is why girls feel alienated from comics. This is not how a human lounges. This isn’t even how a human sits, looking worried or upset. This is how someone sits when they are trying to be sexy and even that is debatable as this pose looks really uncomfortable and unnatural. This is what we’re talking about when we say ‘male gaze’.Also? It makes you look like a terrible artist when you do this. Let’s pretend sexism doesn’t exist for a moment. I wouldn’t give this image a pass because Mary Jane looks awful here. It’s really jarring to look at and it’s obvious eye candy in what seems like it’s supposed to be a serious image. If you want to be serious, be serious. If you want to draw cheesecake, draw cheesecake. You can’t have both.
I have feelings about comic art, okay?

^ THIS.
The Japanese call this concept “fan service,” and it surfaces every now and then in anime and manga. Unfortunately, all most conventional American comics cater to this (the male gaze) all the time, to a ridiculous extent.
(Obviously I’m not counting Chester Brown, Craig Thompson, Joe Sacco, Adrian Tomine, Marjane Satrapi, etc etc in this - I’m referring to Typical North American Comics with barrel chested men with square jaws and helpless waif women with hourglass figures and no personality.)
In this image MJ is represented as Peter’s Woman, no more, no less - there is nothing in this image that tells us anything about her as an individual, other than, perhaps, that she seems very co-dependent. The only expressions of self in this image, presumably in her apartment (a place where we get to learn more about our characters) involve an obsession with Peter. Newsflash: womens’ identities don’t revolve around who we’re dating. Get it right. Please and thank you.
Also who has a giant photo of themselves on their wall? Seriously.

The Inkling is a “digital sketch pen” that allows you to draw or sketch on any standard piece of paper (a big advantage over Livescribe, which requires special notebooks) and automatically have a digital version created. The pen looks like a regular ballpoint pen, but is much more powerful than that. As you draw, sketches, mind-maps, or brainstorms all get captured, and are available just by connecting your pen to the computer. You can even create layers as you sketch, and edit drawings even easier when you get back to the computer. Files can be accessed in applications like Photoshop and Illustrator, or just viewed on the computer. There’s also a receiver that comes with the Inkling, which is likely how Wacom was able to avoid requiring special paper. The receiver clips to whatever page or notebook you’re using, and requires an uninterrupted line of sight with the pen while you’re working. It could be a little kludgy, as the receiver is fairly large and is one more thing to carry and set up when you want to work. Battery life for the system, Wacom says, is more than eight hours of working time, which is a good number, but still means you might want to carry a normal pen or the charging cable in case you have a full day’s worth of sketching to do.

Recently had a super-fun ghetto screenprinting party with illustrator chums Yigi Chang, Michael Fan, Vivian Rosas, Jennifer Ilett, and Kara Le. It was my first time screenprinting without using photo emulsion, so it was a bit of an adventure! The blue water above is from this blue stuff we used to draw on our screens, like so…
